Topic: PC Maintenance

Your programs and data files can only live on a healthy hard drive, so it's necessary to maintain your drive in good condition if you want your PC to work properly. Your hard drive is constantly being written to and read from and file errors will definitely occur over time. You can buy (or rent) a program to do the maintenance for you or do-it-yourself for free. All the necessary tools are part of the Windows operating system itself and you don't have to be a computer expert to do it.

Check Your Hard Disk For Errors
You can help solve some computer problems and improve the performance of your computer by making sure that your hard disk has no errors.

1. Click on the Start button, and then double-click on "Computer" or "My Computer".
2. Right-click on your C: (Local Drive), and then click "Properties".
3. Click the "Tools" tab, and then, under "Error-checking", click "Check Now".
4. Select "Automatically fix file system errors". Otherwise, the disk check will simply report problems but not fix them.
5. Click Start.

Depending upon the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes. For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it's checking for errors.

Note: If you select Automatically fix file system errors for a disk that is in use (for example, the partition that contains Windows), you'll be prompted to reschedule the disk check for the next time you restart your computer.

Defragmentation
Computer files are stored as small segments in the sectors of your hard drive. In time, a single file can have its parts scattered all over the disk. This slows your computer down and causes errors. Defragmentation rewrites your files contiguously, like when your drive was new and speeds processing up considerably.

1. Click on the Start button, and then double-click on "Computer" or "My Computer".
2. Right-click on your C: (Local Drive), and then click "Properties".
3. Click the "Tools" tab, and then, under "Defragmentation", click "Defragment Now".

4. Highlight your C: drive and click "Defragment".

Disk Defragmenter might take from several minutes to a few hours to finish, depending on the size and degree of fragmentation of your hard disk. You can still use your computer during the defragmentation process.
